Meetings & Conventions: Incentive News

Dell, Nordstrom Lauded for Policies
Two well-known U.S. companies, Dell and
Nordstrom, have been recognized for doing the right thing when it
comes to motivating their employees and providing outstanding
customer satisfaction.
The Austin-based computer firm and the Seattle-based retailer
were selected for Performance Through People awards by the faculty
of the recently established Forum for People Management and
Measurement at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. (see
Incentive Newsline, October 2002). Dell was lauded for its efforts
to transform the company from a manufacturing-based business into a
service-oriented one. Nordstrom was recognized for its “inverted
pyramid” style of management, where frontline employees who have
direct contact with customers are paid more than traditionally
higher-compensated buyers and merchandisers.
Both firms reward and motivate their customer service
representatives with cash incentives.
