San Francisco can keep a few suits and personal items in a "luxury
locker" at the hotel. They'll find their clothes dry-cleaned and
laundered when they return. Another perk: an on-site
pillow-fluffing machine, which will puff feather pillows to each
guest's specifications.
The minimum wage hike from $4.75 to $5.15 in
September 1997 hit the restaurant industry hard, according to the
National Restaurant Association. Research shows 146,000 jobs have
been eliminated and 42 percent of restaurants increased prices,
despite a drop in wholesale food costs. Congress is now debating
another 20 percent increase in the minimum wage.
