Meetings & Conventions: Short Cuts January 2001

Short Cuts:Family-Friendly
Benefits

Years ago, perks like help with relocation were offered only to
a company’s top executives. Not anymore, thanks to a shrinking
labor pool that has left employers scrambling to fill positions.
The latest weapons in luring employees into the corporate fold and
keeping them happily ensconced there are “family friendly” benefits
ranging from adoption support services to flextime, job sharing and
elder care. A recent survey conducted by the Alexandria, Va.-based
Society for Human Resource Management (www.shrm.org), which
randomly sampled 2,500 of its 150,000 members, turned up some new
enticements: 6 percent of respondents now offer mortgage and rental
assistance; 3 percent give cash loans to help with down payments on
home mortgages. “Companies are becoming more creative,” said an
SHRM spokesperson. “And more are offering these benefits
companywide, across gender and title.”
