Smoking will be illegal in restaurants, bars and workplaces starting May 5.

CALIFORNIA
The first state to ban smoking in bars in 1998, California also bans the habit in restaurants and workplaces.

DALLAS
On March 1, Dallas went smoke-free in restaurants, hotel public spaces and bars, except those deriving at least 75 percent of their revenue from alcohol.

DELAWARE
As of last November, the Clean Indoor Air Act bans all smoking in bars, casinos, restaurants and hotel lobbies.

FLORIDA
Constitutional Amendment 6, which passed last November, will prohibit smoking in all public places beginning on July 1.

MAINE
In September 1999, the state banned smoking in restaurants.

MAUI, HAWAII
Restaurants on the island went smoke-free as of Jan. 1, including those with bars and outdoor seating areas.

NEW YORK CITY
As of March 30, patrons are banned from smoking in all restaurants and bars except those where the owner is the sole employee.

UTAH
Smoking is illegal in all public places, except bars, and within 25 feet of public facilities.

VERMONT
Public places eateries and theaters but not bars are smoke-free.
