HEALTH BEAT
Not to put a damper on a profitable trend, but cigars sold in
the United States soon will carry warnings alerting smokers to
grave health risks. Stogies will be labeled with one of five
statements from the Surgeon General, including “Cigar Smoking Can
Cause Cancers Of The Mouth And Throat, Even If You Do Not Inhale,”
“Cigars Are Not A Safe Alternative To Cigarettes” and sure to be
popular at cocktail parties “Tobacco Smoke Increases The Risk Of
Lung Cancer And Heart Disease, Even In Nonsmokers.”
In a settlement announced in late June by the Federal Trade
Commission, the seven largest U.S. cigar companies agreed to
include the statements on cigar boxes, smaller packages and
individually sold cigars. The warnings are more stringent than
those currently on cigarettes, requiring a more prominent package
display and specifying the dangers of secondhand smoke.
The action follows the release of a smoldering report by the
National Cancer Institute detailing the risks associated with cigar
smoking. Look for new labeling to appear by early 2001.
