Short Cuts:
Bond cowboy-style at Marriott’s retreat
Home on the Range

City folk can get a taste of the country life at the Marriott
Ranch in Hume, Va., a one-hour drive west of Washington, D.C.
Ronald Reagan rode horseback here, a matter of local pride.
For groups, the 4,200-acre site (purchased by Marriott’s founder
in 1951) hosts roping events, barrel races and orienteering
courses. “We’re small, but we get creative,” says general manager
Lanier Cate.
Guests can stay at the 10-room Inn at Fairfield Farm (above).
Meeting space at the ranch totals 1,823 square feet in four
separate facilities. (540) 364-2627; www.marriottranch.com
