Mexico’s Senate
approved a measure on Oct. 30 that will institute a US$5 per person
tax on cruise passengers who visit Mexican ports. It is estimated
the tax will generate US$30 million a year in revenue, with 80
percent earmarked for maintaining and improving the infrastructure
in the country’s port communities. The charge goes into effect as
of June 1, 2008.
Hilton bested Marriott
for the right to build a $398.2 million, 1,000-room headquarters
hotel to support the Broward County Convention Center in Fort
Lauderdale. The property, projected to open in mid-2011, will
feature 74,000 square feet of meeting space and be connected to the
convention center by an elevated walkway.
The Las Vegas Convention
Center broke ground in October on a new $16.8 million Las
Vegas Metropolitan Police Department substation on its campus.
According to FBI statistics released that same month, violent crime
rose 32 percent in the city and unincorporated Clark County over
2005. The national average amounted to a 1 percent increase per
100,000 residents.
