United Airlines was granted official approval on Feb. 8 to operate the first nonstop daily flight between Washington Dulles International Airport and Beijing, a 14-hour trip linking the two capitals. The carrier beat out American Airlines, Continental and Northwest, which had filed for permission to fly to China from their respective hubs. The new service will begin on March 28.

The State Department said it issued 12.1 million passports during fiscal year 2006 and expects to issue at least 16 million in 2007, due to tighter passport rules for travelers entering the United States.
