Short Cuts:Now Presenting
Some soothsayers read the stars; William Strauss, coauthor with
Neil Howe of The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy
(Broadway Books, New York City, $15.95,www.fourthturning.com), reads
generations. The book discusses the characteristics of four
recurring historical cycles: the first turning is a “high,” the
second is an “awakening,” the third is an “unraveling” and the
fourth is a “crisis.” Strauss predicts the United States is headed
for a fourth turning, a time marked by upheaval as well as
opportunity.
