Short Cuts:Risky Business: Violence At
Work
IIncidences of school shootings have skyrocketed, but children
aren’t the only ones acting out aggressions. Workplace violence has
risen steadily since 1996, prompting corporations to step up
security, implement employee assistance programs and teach managers
to identify warning signs.
In a November 1999 survey of human resource professionals by the
Alexandria, Va.-based Society for Human Resource Management, 57
percent reported their firms had experienced violent incidents,
compared to 48 percent in 1996. And 68 percent had written policies
addressing workplace violence, up from 59 percent in 1996. Commonly
reported acts included verbal threats, harassment, bomb threats,
pushing and shoving, and fistfights.
