Short Cuts:Top 10 places for kidnap
risk
Colombia is Number One on a top-10 list that is not likely to be
mentioned in the country’s marketing material. It is the leading
danger zone for kidnapping risk, according to recent statistics
from London-based Hiscox Group (www.hiscox.com), an international
provider of kidnap and ransom insurance. Runners up are Mexico, the
former Soviet Union, Brazil, the Philippines, Nigeria, India,
Ecuador and Venezuela. The number-10 spot went to South Africa,
which made the list this year for the first time.
According to Hiscox spokesperson Alex Gordon Shute, a growing
number of firms are recognizing the need to protect employees doing
business in risky locations and are quietly paying for kidnapping
coverage. “In less-developed countries, Westerners are perceived as
wealthy by the local population. That perception places them at
risk,” says Gordon Shute. Premiums cover not only financial loss,
but preventive security advice, training for company security
forces and a 24-hour emergency response team skilled in ransom
negotiation.
