The U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Chicago Department of Aviation officially unveiled automated passport-control kiosks last week at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. Arriving travelers now can scan their own passports, complete their customs declarations and confirm their information using the automated kiosks before reaching customs officers. Officials expect the machines to significantly streamline the arrival process by automating the administrative tasks. During the pilot period, the kiosks have contributed to a 40 percent decrease in wait times for U.S. citizens. The system originally was developed by the Vancouver Airport Authority and U.S.CBP; the former partnered with the Chicago Department of Aviation to provide the software technology and kiosks in the Windy City.
