Keeping it Kosher

When planning a kosher meal, keep these money-saving tips in mind, courtesy of Sarah Weiss, events manager at the Foundation for Jewish Camp (
• A venue won't make money on F&B when you bring a kosher caterer in, so be prepared to pay a surcharge.
• Kosher meat is very expensive, and observant Jews don't expect to be served meat at events, so you'll save money by serving a fish meal.
• For a casual meal, have the caterer drop off the food with heating instructions and disposable plates and utensils. Otherwise you will need to rent acceptable dishware as well as arrange for a separate prep area in the venue's kitchen for the proper handling of kosher meals.
