HEALTH BEAT
KID STRESS. Childhood isn't as easy as it might
seem in retrospect. Almost 70 percent of kids ages 8 to 13 worry
every now and then, according to a study by researchers at
Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
Among nearly 200 children interviewed, the top 10 worries were
school performance, dying or illness of significant others, getting
sick, being teased, making mistakes, their appearance, upcoming
events (such as a party), their parents divorcing, whether other
children like them and concern over their pets.
On average, kids dwell on their most intense worry two or three
times a week. How do they cope? Pretty much the same ways as
adults: More than half (55.6 percent) engage in a distracting
activity, 37.6 percent try to think about more pleasant things and
8.3 percent talk about the problem with other people.
