The Oklahoma City Council has chosen Omni Hotels & Resorts to operate a headquarters hotel that's in development adjacent to Oklahoma City's new convention center (pictured). Work on the new Omni is scheduled to begin later this year.

The city selected Omni's proposal in September after a public bidding process, and has been negotiating with the hotelier ever since. The agreement they reached calls for the city and Omni to share development costs for a 600-room, full-service hotel just north of the new convention center, which will feature 200,000 square feet of exhibit space and 45,000 square feet of meeting space.

The mid-rise hotel will total 570,000 square feet and cost $230 million -- $150.1 million from Omni and $85.4 million from the city, leaving a balance that will come primarily from tax increment financing (TIF) districts. The property's amenities will include six restaurants and bars, and more than 50,000 square feet of meeting space.

Both the hotel and convention center are scheduled to open in 2020.

"Our partnership with Omni will support our investment in the [new] convention center, and position it to become a resounding success," said city manager Jim Couch. "Having a top-quality, full-service hotel next door to the convention center will maximize Oklahoma City's return on an important investment in the increasingly competitive convention business. This is good for Oklahoma City and good for Oklahoma."
