When it comes to the Southwest, it’s hard to improve upon the colorful and inspirational landscapes. Groups meeting in Arizona and New Mexico often head there to enjoy dramatic desert and mountain settings and attractions found nowhere else in the nation.

Thanks to major urban hubs, many still expanding outward and upward, planners will find more than enough resources to organize one of their hottest meetings in these states.
Phoenix & glendale: A Gateway to Greatness
America’s sixth-largest city, Phoenix, appeals to visiting association groups with western character and architecture; modern city luxuries that range from championship golf courses to five-star resort hotels; and a picturesque location amid the Sonoran Desert.
The airport’s service and convenient transportation options were two reasons Lydia Janow decided to bring Aviation Week’s Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul Americas Conference & Exhibition to Phoenix four times. The most recent conference, held in April at the downtown Phoenix Convention Center, drew more than 10,000 registered industry professionals and 700 companies.
“Phoenix is a hub, which is important in my industry,” said Janow, managing director of events and trade show for Aviation Week. In her experience, she said, in Phoenix, “You can rely on getting good service, and the hotels will work with you on pricing. It’s important when you’re bringing in people from all over the world.”
Both major and minor events are held each year at the silver LEED–certified convention center, designed with colors and textures that evoke the surrounding desert. The three-building complex includes 900,000 square feet of event space, including the state’s largest ballroom; thoughtful amenities, like real-time translation; and sustainable practices, such as sourcing food from within 100 miles as often as possible.
In hotel news, the Crowne Plaza/Phoenix Airport recently finished a $10 million face-lift, which revamped guest rooms, modernized event facilities and renovated its restaurant, lounge, lobby and pool areas. Also near the airport is the Hilton/Phoenix Airport, scheduled to finish a $7 million property-wide renovation by its new owners late this month. North of downtown, the Arizona Biltmore has launched a multimillion-dollar renovation in honor of its 85th anniversary. Last summer, the Biltmore redesigned 15 cabanas at its Paradise Pool complex. Farther north, the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa completed $4.2 million in renovations last year. And south of downtown, what was formerly Ahwatukee’s Grace Inn is now the Four Points by Sheraton/Phoenix–South Mountain.
City attractions that double as event sites include The Pressroom (formerly the Madison Event Center), which can host up to 1,000; the 2,312-seat Symphony Hall; and the Phoenix Art Museum. The Heard Museum and the Musical Instrument Museum each offer event space for up to 1,000. Within Papago Park, the Desert Botanical Garden can host functions of up to 500, and the Phoenix Zoo offers a choice of 16 venues including the 13,435-square-foot Neely Education & Event Center, which overlooks the zoo’s lake.
Hiking and biking through the city’s parks are ideal ways to explore Phoenix. South of downtown, the 16,000-acre South Mountain Park & Preserve welcomes nearly 3 million visitors annually. Groups can hold gatherings at the park’s ramadas, which serve as special event areas. Another outdoor option is the 12-acre Farm at South Mountain, where up to 300 can gather amid pecan trees or spacious lawn and garden areas.
West of Phoenix, in Glendale, the University of Phoenix Stadium is scheduled to host the Super Bowl again in 2015, Jobing.com Arena hosts concerts and the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, and Camelback Ranch serves as the spring training facility for the Dodgers and the White Sox. Nearby, in Litchfield Park, the Wigwam Resort recently com-pleted a $16 million multi-phase renovation project.
Scottsdale, Mesa & Tempe: Business in the Desert
When people think of Scottsdale, sophisticated desert resorts and a stylish shopping scene usually come to mind. One of the city’s largest multiuse event centers is WestWorld, a site home to the newly expanded Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center. Thanks to a $42.8 million project that was completed earlier this year, the center now offers 300,000 square feet of continuous, climate-controlled space. Just five miles away is another popular and unique site: Taliesin West, built by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s using desert rocks and sand.
Downtown Scottsdale continues to reinvent itself with new spaces like the Maya Day & Nightclub, with more than 27,000 square feet of space, and V2, with 8,000 square feet of space on three floors. In January, the Bottled Blonde Pizzeria & Beer Garden opened with 9,000 square feet of patio and lounge space, and an adjacent entertainment venue, Livewire, is expected to open this month with space for up to 1,200 people.
Baseball fans will enjoy a trip to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, the new spring-training facility for two Major League teams—the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies. The facility, located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community north of downtown, includes an 11,000-seat ballpark, banquet space for up to 400 people and luxury suites. The nearby Talking Stick Resort offers six dining options, a spa, casino and championship golf. A mile away, the Octane Raceway at the Pavilions at Talking Stick offers exhilarating team-building experiences for up to 500 people on its go-kart tracks.
All the outstanding resort options in Scottsdale may make choosing accommodations a challenge. News of note includes the reflagging of the Montelucia Resort & Spa, which is now the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, and the Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center, which has joined Destination Hotels & Resorts and will undergo a renovation in 2015. The Millennium Resort & Villas Scottsdale is scheduled to reopen this fall after a short-term renovation. Also undergoing a renovation is the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. And the Chaparral Suites Scottsdale, with space for groups of up to 1,400, is celebrating more than 60 years of ownership by the Silverman family.
North of town, near Carefree, is The Boulders, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, with two new, faster-play golf courses for time-crunched attendees.
Arizona’s third-largest city, Mesa, is home to the Mesa Convention Center in downtown, which has 38,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space as well as an outdoor amphitheater that can seat up to 5,000. When combined with the adjacent, renovated Phoenix Marriott Mesa, the two properties offer 56,000 square feet of total event space.
Other options might include a performance at the Mesa Arts Center, which offers a rental-support program for nonprofit groups and can host up to 100 people, and the Nature Center at Usery Mountain Regional Park, which has guided ranger walks. In addition, the new Cubs Park, a 15,000-seat, spring-training stadium for the Major League’s Chicago Cubs, is available for rental for concerts and private events.
East of town, on the banks of the Salt River, the Saguaro Lake Ranch offers lodge-style accommodations, meeting space for up to 30 people and recreational activities such as horseback riding, kayaking and tubing. And about 15 miles north of downtown Mesa, in Fort McDowell, the Radisson Fort McDowell Resort & Casino works in conjunction with the nearby Fort McDowell Adventures, which can organize group horseback rides, cattle drives and hay rides for as many as 2,000 attendees.
Arizona State University, located in Tempe, regularly welcomes association events. Campus venues include the 14,198-seat Wells Fargo Arena; the 3,000-seat, Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Gammage Auditorium, which is kicking off its 50th anniversary this month; and Memorial Union, with space for up to 575. Off-campus choices include the new 58,000-square-foot Main Event with more than 125 interactive games and event spaces for up to 1,000; the lakeside Tempe Center for the Arts, with meeting space for up to 600; the Arizona Historical Society Museum, with space for up to 400; and the Green at Hayden Flour Mill. On the south side of town, groups can meet at Rustler’s Rooste, a steakhouse that can host events of up to 1,500 guests.
Two local meeting hotels have recently renovated their guest rooms: the Phoenix Marriott Tempe at the Buttes and the Sheraton Phoenix Airport Hotel. This fall, the Twin Palms Hotel is scheduled to reopen under a new name following a multimillion-dollar renovation.
South of Tempe, in Chandler, the Rawhide Western Town & Steakhouse is a Wild West theme park that can be used for events of up to 1,000. Organizations that have taken advantage of all the area has to offer recently include the American Bar Association, Uphill Into the Wind and Veer Consulting.
greater Tucson: An Oasis Awaits
About 110 miles south of Phoenix, the free-spirited city of Tucson beckons with an abundance of outdoor adventures, cultural activities, restaurants, ranches and resorts.
Downtown, the hub for major events continues to be the Tucson Convention Center, which has 205,000 square feet of space. Features include a 90,000-square-foot exhibition hall; two performing arts theaters; and the Tucson Arena, which can seat nearly 9,000 people. Groups that have gathered at the convention center of late include the Arizona Association for Economic Development, the American Copper Council and the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association.
North of downtown, the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa shines after a $30 million renovation. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s Casino del Sol Resort opened a new golf course last December. Against the Santa Catalina Mountains, The Lodge at Ventana Canyon is undergoing a $4 million renovation with completion scheduled for January.
About 20 miles northwest of Tucson, in Marana, the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain Resort offers a new meetings app that allows planners to make requests of the hotel at any time.
Spread out amid the Southern Arizona landscape are several western-style ranches suitable for gatherings. Just east of Tucson, the Tanque Verde Ranch, founded in 1868, can host groups of up to 300, and the 34-acre Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort (undergoing an expansion and renovation through May 2015) has meeting space for up to 200. About 70 miles southeast of the city, in the town of Sierra Vista, the Windemere Hotel & Conference Center provides meeting space for up to 500 people.
Central & Northern Arizona: Rockin’ Natural Wonders
A four-season destination at 5,200 feet, Prescott offers a delightful foothill setting. Associations will find it easy to get down to business at the remodeled Prescott Resort & Conference Center. Smaller groups can meet at the historic Hassayampa Inn, which recently changed ownership.
The red-rock beauty of Sedona is striking. One of Sedona’s best-known meeting properties is the Enchantment Resort & Spa, which completed a $25 million renovation two years ago. The Hilton Sedona Resort & Spa is undergoing a $7 million renovation project.
About 25 miles south, in Camp Verde, the Cliff Castle Casino & Hotel offers space for meetings and the Verde Valley Wine Trail features wineries with tours and tasting rooms.
Many groups meet in Flagstaff because of its proximity to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. And at the Lowell Observatory, groups of up to 60 can participate in special education programs that include exclusive access to its telescopes. At the 200-acre Arboretum at Flagstaff, a historic home welcomes events of up to 50 from mid-April through October. At the Arizona Snowbowl (14 miles outside of Flagstaff), groups can utilize indoor conference space for up to 300 and overnight accommodations at the 25-room Ski Lift Lodge & Cabins.
Flagstaff’s largest meeting site is the High Country Conference Center at Northern Arizona University. It can accommodate events of up to 800. Adjoining the facility is the silver LEED–certified Drury Inn & Suites, with its own small meeting space. Also available is the university’s Du Bois Center. Off campus, a popular meeting hotel is the Little America/Flagstaff, set on 500 acres and offering event space for up to 350.
Groups can also meet and stay within Grand Canyon National Park, home to seven guest lodges. On the South Rim, the Thunderbird and Kachina lodges offer meeting space.
Lake Havasu & Yuma: Actively Seeking Success
With a setting along the Colorado River, Lake Havasu City, aka “Arizona’s Playground,” is a popular destination for boating, biking, hiking, fishing and, of course, checking out the original London Bridge, which now spans a section of the river. On the western shores of Thompson Bay is the Nautical Beachfront Resort. Or planners can arrange events and banquets at the London Bridge Golf Club.
Downriver is Yuma, which posits to be the sunniest city on earth. On the riverfront, Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park has a day-use event area. Other venues in town include the Yuma Civic Center, which features 25,000 square feet of exhibit and meeting space, and Arizona Western College’s 3C Community Center, with several conference spaces.
Meeting planners looking to book attendee accommodations will find guest rooms at the new Candlewood Suites/Yuma, which opened last December north of town. Nearby, the Fairfield Inn & Suites underwent a full renovation earlier this year.
Albuquerque, New Mexico: Reaching New Heights
Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city, welcomes visitors with a bounty of history, culture, adventure and food unique to the region. The downtown area is in the midst of $300 million in planned developments, including a $20 million renovation of the 600,000-square-foot Albuquerque Convention Center, which is expected to be completed this month. Groups that have recently met at the convention center include the New Mexico Municipal League, the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Water Works Association and the New Mexico Dental Association.
Another popular attraction is the 2.7-mile Sandia Peak Tramway, which just renovated its upper terminal station. At the tram’s peak is the High Finance Restaurant and at the base, groups can gather at Sandiago’s Mexican Grill or wander through the New Mexico Ski Hall of Fame & Ski Museum.
Other significant Albuquerque venues include the outdoor Civic Plaza and Expo New Mexico. The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History and the Anderson Abruzzo International Balloon Museum each have event space for up to 1,000. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science’s DynaTheater has a five-story screen; the National Hispanic Cultural Center has indoor and outdoor meeting space; and nonprofit contemporary art space 516 Arts welcomes events with 5,500 square feet of space. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center has 24,000 square feet of event space.
Downtown, a block from the convention center, the historic and gold LEED–certified Hotel Andaluz is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Heritage Hotels & Resorts continues to fortify its presence in town. At its Nativo Lodge, newly transformed Artists Rooms feature large-scale installations by Native American artists. Later this fall, Heritage plans to begin construction on a 118-room property in Old Town, expected to open in 2016. Just outside town, Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm, set on 25 acres, has become a popular site for retreats and special events.
South of Albuquerque, near Isleta, the Isleta Resort & Casino features a 2,500-seat multipurpose concert venue.
On the Santa Ana Pueblo between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa is set to undergo guest-room renovations, to be completed by the end of the year.
Santa Fe & Taos: Settings That Inspire
Creative inspiration is easy to come by in Santa Fe. Known as “The City Different,” Santa Fe offers a booming arts scene. In the heart of town, near the historic plaza, the LEED-certified Santa Fe Community Convention Center offers 40,000 square feet of space and can host groups of up to 2,100. A few blocks away, gatherings for up to 700 can be arranged at the New Mexico History Museum, which includes the Palace of the Governors. Approximately 1,500 guest rooms are within walking distance of the city’s main plaza and the convention center. New to the city is the Drury Plaza Hotel, which opened in August with meeting space for up to 300 people. At Hotel Santa Fe, a newly expanded outdoor patio can further serve groups and meetings. In other hotel news, the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe has added the 2,800-square-feet Monte Vista Terrace, which lends itself to events for up to 300 people; the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi finished its guest-room renovation last year; and the Eldorado Hotel & Spa, home to Santa Fe’s largest ballroom, has been purchased by Heritage Hotels & Resorts.
About 70 miles north of Santa Fe is Taos. The Taos Convention Center features three grand halls, the largest of which can accommodate up to 700. Within walking distance are numerous restaurants, art galleries and attractions. The Taos Ski Valley, just 18 miles north of town, provides 3,000 square feet of function space and is a year-round playground with horseback riding, mountain biking and orienteering available during the summer months.
Northwestern New Mexico: Cultural Communal Posts
Near the western border on Interstate 40, Gallup is a good fit for associations hoping to draw attendees from both Arizona and New Mexico. East of town, Red Rock Park has a 5,000-seat arena.
About 80 miles southeast of Gallup, on the Acoma Pueblo, the Sky City Cultural Center & Haak’u Museum is available for private functions. In addition, the Sky City Casino & Hotel offers meeting space for up to 300.
Farmington, at the confluence of three rivers, is a scenic city for regional gatherings. Retreats of up to 20 can be held at the Soaring Eagle Lodge, set on the banks of the San Juan River. Also in town is the Red Lion/Farmington.
Other venues include the Farmington Civic Center, with 23,000 square feet of function space, including recently renovated exhibit space; the San Juan County Fairgrounds-McGee Park with a 49,500-square-foot convention center; and San Juan College.
Southern New Mexico: Event Driven
Set between the Organ Mountains and the Rio Grande, Las Cruces beckons with outdoor activities, museums and festivals. The LEED-certified Las Cruces Convention Center offers 30,000 square feet of space. At New Mexico State University, the Corbett Center has event space for up to 11,000. Other options include the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, Dickersons Catering and downtown’s Rio Grande Theatre.
West of town, the Southern New Mexico State Fairgrounds also hosts numerous concerts, rodeos and other large events, and Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces features updated function space.
To the northeast, in Ruidoso, the remodeled, 24,000-square-foot Ruidoso Convention Center is conveniently located adjacent to the Sierra Blanca Golf Course. In nearby Ruidoso Downs, the Ruidoso Downs Race Track & Billy the Kid Casino and the Hubbard Museum of the American West, an affiliate of the Smithsonian, can both accommodate groups. In Alto, the Flying J Ranch offers Western-style cookouts and activities for up to 600, and in Mescalero, the lakeside Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino offers championship golf and 40,000 square feet of meeting space.
Potential alien sightings still draw many visitors to Roswell, home of the 1947 “Roswell Incident.” Meeting facilities can be found at the Roswell Convention & Civic Center, which provides 35,000 square feet of space.
About 75 miles south, Carlsbad lies on the picturesque Pecos River. On its banks, the Pecos River Village Conference Center offers space for up to 400. Another choice is the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts & Exhibition Center with 14,000 square feet of space.
Options Aplenty
Indigenous culture and geologic wonders are major highlights of any visit to Arizona and New Mexico. Groups visiting the region will undoubtedly also benefit from stunning architectural venues, unique cuisine and local events that show off the destinations’ fun sides.
