The Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce unveiled plans yesterday for a Las Vegas-style casino, two 1,000-room hotels, a 1 million-square-foot convention center and a youth sports center at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, N.J., according to press reports. The complex would be adjacent to the proposed American Dreams shopping mall, water park and amusement park. The proposal also calls for a 1.5-mile monorail to transport visitors around the complex. Currently, the state only allows gambling in Atlantic City, but with that destination struggling, some government officials and developers are calling for an expansion of gaming to Northern New Jersey, closer to the New York City market. A recent poll showed residents are split, with 50 percent opposing opening casinos outside Atlantic City and 42 percent in favor.TagsHotels and Resorts
