The 162-room Moxy Austin–University has opened at the University of Texas at Austin campus, the first of the brand to debut in the state. Owned by White Lodging and part of Marriott International’s experiential Moxy Hotels brand, the property is designed to be as lively as its neighborhood, particularly with its 24-hour taco counter.
The Moxy's guest rooms feature an industrial-chic style with platform beds and peg walls instead of closets. On the lobby level, Bar Moxy offers a living-room feel and opens onto the Backyard. The space, which can host small outdoor events for up to 30 people, is decorated with lounge seating, fire "features" and an interactive guest book that streams Instagram images and videos from Moxy's 60 hotels around the world.
The open-at-all-hours Zombie Taco serves up breakfast (try the American: sausage, bacon, hash browns, scrambled eggs, sharp cheddar and jalapeño salsa), lunch (such as the Walking Taco, with Texas chili, Fritos, cheddar cheese, lime sour cream and pickled red onion) and dinner (find the signature dish here, the Zombie Burrito with pork carnitas, adobo bbq chicken, pepper jack cheese, corn salsa, black beans and carrot slaw).
The new hotel has a nearly all-female leadership team, led by opening captain Lynn Snyder, who also helped open the Moxy Chicago in 2018.
While the Moxy does not have any formal meeting space, its nearby sister property — the dual-branded Otis Hotel and AC Hotel from Marriott — has more than 7,000 square feet of event space, including a 3,480-square-foot ballroom and five smaller meeting rooms. Those hotels opened last summer, with a combined 347 guest rooms, and they also share their restaurants: Acre 41, with a menu of American fare sourced locally; Burger Bar, a walk-up streetside spot; the Otopia Rooftop, serving signature cocktails; and Bar AC, a Spanish-inspired bar and tapas restaurant.
Moxy owner White Lodging also recently opened Austin's Zanzibar, a tropical rooftop venue seven stories up whose terrace is available for events.
