The International Association of Exhibitions and Events welcomed Daniel McKinnon as its new chair during Expo! Expo!, the organization's annual meeting and exhibition, held this past November in San Antonio. Vice president of client services at Freeman XP, McKinnon brings more than two decades' experience in show management to his new role. He recently spoke with M&C about his plans for IAEE during his yearlong board term.

What are your priorities as chair?
To establish and develop our newly launched strategic plan, which is based on three pillars: advocacy, education and the marketplace. As we change and develop new tools within our industry, we need to make sure we are serving our customers and clients as well as contributing to the economy.

Where do you see opportunities for growth within the organization?

IAEE has very strong local chapters, and we need to continue to cultivate their growth, but we also want to build out our relationships with partners within the U.S. as well as globally. One way we plan to do that is by attending and speaking at shows in targeted regions. For example, [IAEE CEO] David Dubois and I will be attending the CEFO Conference in Qingdao, China, later this month. Since we preach a lot about the value of face-to-face meetings, we thought we had better get out and demonstrate that.

What's next on your agenda?
I'm creating what's called a "Futurescaping" task force to help us better define what the future of the exhibitions and events industry will look like. I plan to invite a number of top-level industry leaders to share their views about this important topic.
