Getting More per Gallon

Smarter driving will save money at the pump

Gas pump
Everyone can get better gas mileage out of their cars, according to fueleconomy.gov. Tips to consider when driving:

Don’t speed. In general, fuel efficiency tanks once you break 60 miles per hour.

Empty the trunk. Every excess 100 pounds in your car cuts your miles-per-gallon by 2 percent.

Fix the filters.
Clogged air filters drag down gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.

Add air.
Properly inflated tires can boost mileage up to 3 percent.

Time it right. Avoid peak commuting hours; you burn fuel while idling in traffic.
