PLANNERS ARE DIVIDED ON MERITS OF PROFESSIONAL
ASSOCIATIONSShould You Belong?
How valuable are meetings industry
organizations? A recent online reader survey by M&C and NTM
Research found mixed results.
Fully 59 percent of 372 respondents don’t belong to any of 11
major industry organizations; of those, 49 percent are considering
joining one. Among members, 37 percent belong to Meeting
Professionals International.
Of the 51 percent who are not considering joining an
association, almost half (48 percent) don’t feel membership would
add much to their professional development.
Interestingly, association members are active on both the local
and national levels: 57 percent attend local meetings, while 48
percent go to national events.
What lures them? Continuing education (43 percent) and
networking (43 percent) are cited as the two most valuable aspects
of professional associations.
While education is a strong draw for members, it also is the
area that needs the most work: 49 percent say education is where
associations need to improve.
Only one-third believe meetings industry associations meet the
needs of a diverse membership; 54 percent say the associations are
“somewhat” successful in this effort.
For many, the price of participating comes from their own
pockets. About two-thirds of respondents say their employers cover
association dues; 3 percent split the cost. Similarly, 64 percent
are reimbursed for travel to national meetings, while 4 percent pay
a portion of their travel costs.
