FAMILIARIZATION TOURS ARE USEFUL, SAY
PLANNERSTrips Turn Into Business
Hosting planners pays off: In an online
survey by
M&C and NTM Research, 88 percent of the 435
meeting planners who say they take familiarization trips report
they have booked business as a direct result of such a trip.
A total of 524 planners responded to the survey, 83 percent of
whom take fam trips.
Appropriateness of destination is a big factor in a planner’s
decision to go. Only 8 percent of respondents say they have taken a
fam trip to a place or hotel they knew would be inappropriate for
their group.
The majority (58 percent) like to take trips sponsored by a
convention and visitors bureau; another 27 percent prefer trips
sponsored by a single property.
Attending a fam trip with their peers is preferred by 59 percent
of those surveyed, while 41 percent like to participate in the
trips on their own.
Most planners do not require much free time when on fams. More
than half (52 percent) prefer the host to organize most of the day.
Still, 38 percent say they like time to meet with hospitality
people on their own.
While 22 percent of respondents say their department or
organization has placed restrictions on accepting fam trips, the
majority (70 percent) say no such guidelines are in place or under
consideration at their workplaces.
