Three U.S. cities -- Austin, Detroit and Tucson -- have been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizaton. UNESCO's Creative Cities Network -- launched in 2004 "to foster international cooperation with and between cities committed to investing in creativity as a driver for sustainable urban development, social inclusion and cultural vibrance" -- designated 47 cities from 33 countries as new members this year (listed below). Of the U.S. cities, Austin was recognized for media arts, Detroit for design and Tucson for gastronomy.
