The Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando
With two new properties in operation and a
third opening next month, this resort/theme park is emerging from
the shadow of Orlando’s long-time reigning attraction, Walt Disney
World.
The 750-room Portofino Bay Hotel, complete with a “piazza”
ringed with cafés and specialty shops, opened in September 1999. In
January 2001, the 650-room Hard Rock Hotel opened its doors. Next
month, the 1,000-room Royal Pacific Resort will make its debut. The
park’s three properties, all managed by Loews Hotels, will offer a
combined 198,000 square feet of meeting space. Among the perks
available only to hotel guests are free water-taxi access to the
theme park and VIP admittance to all rides
