Perched above a secluded stretch of Northern California coastline, the 40-room Mendocino Cove will open Aug. 1. The new design-forward retreat from the founders of the Mendocino Grove glamping resort, the Cove is a transformation of the historic Pine Beach Inn property, now offering wellness, recreation and relaxed luxury across 11 oceanside acres.
Perfect for corporate getaways, Mendocino Cove offers immersive outdoor experiences, eight pickleball courts, and such wellness amenities as a Nordic-inspired spa, which features a hot tub, a sauna and a cold pour. Guests also have access to Pine Beach.
"There's something incredibly special about this stretch of coastline — the scale of the ocean, the quiet of the redwoods, and the feeling of being able to fully slow down and disconnect from everyday life," said Teresa Raffo, cofounder of Mendocino Cove and Mendocino Grove. “We've poured so much care into creating spaces and experiences that encourage people to relax, from mornings on the pickleball courts followed by a cold pour to peaceful moments walking the meditation labyrinth or taking in the natural beauty of the coast. We can't wait for guests to experience it.”
"From the beginning, our goal was to create a place that feels anchored in the Mendocino Coast while offering an experience that's unique to the region," said Chris Hougie, Raffo's partner in the new endeavor.
A good night's sleep
Two distinct buildings, Cypress and Vista Cove, each offer their own design theme of modern coastal living.
Cypress features 11 king suites with king beds and daybeds; two one-bedroom suites with queen beds, pull-out sofas and wet bars; two double-queen suites and one ADA-accessible suite. The look and vibe is inspired by classic California roadside lodges. Vista Cove offers 24 suites, including 19 king suites, four one-bedroom queen suites and one ADA-accessible suite.
All of the accommodations were designed in collaboration with San Francisco's Marie Fisher, incorporating natural textures, warm woods, Waterworks bath fixtures, soaking tubs, gas fireplaces, original artwork, reading nooks and private verandas looking out on the coastline and the gardens.
Spa appointments and recreation
Upon opening, guests will have access to a collection of restorative wellness amenities including a hot tub, a dry sauna, a cold pour, fitness offerings and massage treatments.
Outdoor experiences include a labyrinth, direct beach access, nearby coastal hiking trails, communal fire pits, lawn games, and landscaped gathering spaces designed for connection and slow living.
The property also is home to eight world-class pickleball courts where guests are invited for open play, clinics, lessons and social programming for players of all levels.
Breakfast service with more on tap
Set within Mendocino Cove's coastal meadow, Frolic is the resort's relaxed restaurant and bar, inspired by the wild, dreamlike beauty of the Mendocino Coast. Frolic pairs contemporary coastal style with authentic pieces from the restaurant's past, including its vintage De Sede leather snake sofa. Upon opening, guests can enjoy coffee and breakfast at Frolic or have it delivered directly to their rooms. A full bar and tapas menu will debut in the fall.
