Moscone Center GM Richard Shaff Dies

Richard "Dick" Shaff, who had been general manager of San Francisco's Moscone Center since its 1981 opening, passed away last week at the age of 77, according to SFGate. He died from a blood clot in his heart; Shaff had struggled with blood clots, and had been on medical leave since June. Still, his death was sudden and unexpected, according to the publication.

Shaff spent most of his career in event planning. Before taking the Moscone job 35 years ago, he was assistant general manager of the Long Beach Convention Center. According to the SFGate article, Shaff was so beloved at Moscone that he was persuaded to keep working when he attempted to retire at age 70. 

Shaff is survived by his wife, two children and five grandchildren.
