Other Convention Center Projects in the Works
The Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, R.I., has completed a renovation that began last summer and totaled approximately $25 million. The project included aesthetic upgrades, such as new carpeting and wall panels in the fifth-floor ballrooms and meeting rooms. As part of the renovation, upgrades were also made to the parking garage, fresh light fixtures were added and a new fire alarm system was installed throughout the building.
The crown jewel of the project, however, is the new bar and gathering area called the Exchange, which adds 2,500 square feet for groups. This area on the third floor had previously been open to the floor below it and was unusable space. The renovation project extended the third floor so that groups of up to 150 people can now gather at both the bar and the prefunction space in front of it.
"The upgrades at the RI Convention Center, including the addition of the Exchange, give meeting planners more flexible event spaces to work with and a fresh, modern aesthetic that allows GoProvidence to better meet the evolving needs of our clients," said Thomas Riel, senior vice president of GoProvidence, the city's official convention and visitors bureau.
According to Riel, the bar was designed to elevate the attendee experience and create a picturesque gathering area where guests can enjoy cocktails and city views.
"The Exchange is designed with meetings attendees in mind — this beautiful space overlooks the city skyline and gives planners the tools and environment to create even more impactful meetings here in Providence," said Riel. "We heard directly from meeting planners who wanted a dedicated space for guests and attendees to meet, mingle and extend conversations beyond the session rooms, and we're thrilled that the RI Convention Center has delivered on that need."
