In our latest Eventful Podcast, Fiona Pelham of Positive Impact Events discusses how the meetings industry must take action to shape the sustainability policies that will govern our business.

The 1,501-room Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Aurora, Colo., has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star certification for superior energy performance.

Energy Star–certified buildings are verified to perform in the top 25 percent of buildings nationwide for their sustainability efforts. The Gaylord has been verified in the top 5 percent, based on weather-normalized source energy use, which takes into account the building's occupancy, hours of operation and other key metrics. Energy Star's energy-efficiency certification is based on actual, verified performance.

“We’re honored to earn the Energy Star for superior energy performance at Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center and appreciate the efforts of everyone who has been involved in its efficient operation,” said Suzy Hart, general manager of the resort. “Saving energy is just one of the ways we show our community we care, and that we’re committed to doing our part to protect the environment and public health, both today and for future generations.”

Hart credits this success to the property's extremely knowledgeable engineering team, as well as full support from the owners.

“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s buildings is critical to protecting our environment,” said Jean Lupinacci, chief of the Energy Star commercial and industrial branch. “From the boiler room to the board room, organizations are leading the way by making their buildings more efficient and earning EPA’s Energy Star certification.”

On average, Energy Star-certified buildings and plants use 35 percent less energy, produce 35 percent fewer greenhouse-gas emissions, and are less expensive to operate than their peers.

The Gaylord Rockies Resort, just 15 minutes from Denver International Airport, features 485,000 square feet of meeting space, the Relâche Spa, and nine food-and-beverage outlets.
