Julie Goetz, an associate director at the New York City-based Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), is responsible for administering a variety of information technology special-interest groups. Her duties include planning 10 to 15 conferences each year throughout the United States and abroad for up to 1,000 attendees.

What do you do when you have free time at a conference?
I like to read novels, because I never have time to read at home, since I have a husband, a 2-year-old son and a full-time job.

What does your son think about your absence?
He just thinks I'm at work. He wakes up in the morning and he thinks I'm already at the office. He's too young to really understand.

How often do you talk to your family when you're traveling?
Once a day, although it can be difficult when there's a time difference.

What novel have you read most recently?
Memoirs of a Geisha when I was at the International Conference on Software Engineering in Los Angeles.

If you wrote a novel about meeting planning, what would the title be?
Primal Fear.

What do you fear most about conference planning?
The unpredictable. As much as you plan any meeting, there are always unexpected events that take place. But in a way that's good, because it keeps things interesting. You have to be ready for anything that might happen.

What's your favorite food to eat on the plane?
I like name-brand food when I'm flying; I'm very cautious about mystery meat.

What's your favorite airport food?
I like the yogurt-covered pretzels they sell in some airports. I get mad when they don't have them.

What airports do you like?
I like Miami, because it reminds me of spring break in college, when we'd get away from classes, get off the plane and feel the warmth of Florida as soon as we entered the airport. Plus, they sell yogurt-covered pretzels.

Scott Lindley has been named director of national accounts for the International Meeting Network in Arlington, Va. Lindley previously served as director of meetings for the National Association for College Admission Counseling in Alexandria, Va. He is a 10-year veteran of the meetings industry.

SCHERBARTH IS NEW PRESIDENT AT MEETINGS USA
Robert A. Scherbarth has joined Meetings USA as president and will be based in Centreville, Va. Most recently, Scherbarth was director, national sales, for Wyndham Hotels & Resorts in Washington, D.C. He has worked in the meetings industry for 29 years.
