The former Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort, a Spanish Hacienda-style oceanfront property in Oxnard, Calif., has been rebranded following a multimillion-dollar renovation. The Greater Los Angeles-area hotel is now operating as the Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton.
The 250-suite resort, on the Pacific between Malibu and Santa Barbara, offers seasonal SoCal cuisine with its on-site Ox & Ocean restaurant. The menu is dominated by local seafood and produce harvested from the Oxnard Plain. Sugar Beats, which will open early next year in an on-site converted Airstream trailer, will serve coffee, on-the-go bites, and beer and canned cocktails.
The resort's new name pays tribute to sugar mogul Henry Oxnard, who in the early 1900s planned to use the land along California's Central Coast to grow and process sugar beets, and to name the settlement for the Greek word for sugar, Zachari.
The refurbished guest suites each offer more than 600 square feet of space, with separate bedrooms and living space. The majority of suites have ocean views.
"As one of California’s only true oceanfront resorts, we are honored to introduce guests to Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach as a quintessential California getaway on California’s Gold Coast," noted general manager Ben Ly. "With the resort’s unique position off the renowned Pacific Coast Highway, Zachari Dunes offers an authentic slice of the prized California lifestyle, where visitors can enjoy vibrant, spacious accommodations, epicurean delights, and authentic adventures from sea to sand and beyond."
The resort has more than 23,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space, including the 3,000-square-foot Playa Vista Lawn alongside the beach. Meetings from 15 to 400 attendees can be accommodated comfortably. A public lounge area outside is outfitted with multiple fire pits and seating areas, offering spectacular ocean views.
On-site amenities include a large pool and whirlpool, as well as tennis and basketball courts. Guests can rent a variety of gear on-site from Henry's Sundries & Gear Rental, including bicycles, boogie boards, longboards and GoPro cameras.
