Jane McKinney is a program administrator for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash., operated by Battelle, a nonprofit research trust. Her responsibilities include coordinating the annual ARM Science Team Meeting, a gathering of international scientists. In her travels, McKinney also buys items that she resells in the company store.

How did the company store get started? Some 30 years ago, Battelle staff wanted the opportunity to buy company logo clothing. The Battelle Staff Association responded by offering T-shirts, polo shirts and caps. As time passed, employees began to request other products. Today, we have a “store without walls” run by a volunteer staff member. I am now in charge of searching for a larger selection of items. All profits are reinvested in the program.

What do you like least about traveling? Returning to work and trying to catch up on missed time at the office. It seems like it takes two or more days just to read and respond to e-mail and phone messages.

If you could change your profession, what would your new job be? I would like to be an independent organizer, providing a wide range of organizational services relating to home, business and special events.

What past experiences help you in your present position? From the time I was in high school, I have worked on charity and community events, school fund-raisers and corporate social events. My responsibilities have ranged from generating financial support, planning ad campaigns, hosting trips, managing budgets and more. All of these experiences have served as building blocks for the skills required in my current position.

California Transit Association hires Bowman
Kathy Bowman has joined the Sacramento-based California Transit Association as director of member services, with responsibility for planning meetings. Previously, Bowman served for more than 15 years as a conference specialist at the League of California Cities.

Milam joins TSEA
Jennifer Milam has been appointed education and meetings director at the Springfield, Va.-based Trade Show Exhibitors Association. Milam most recently was with Lyon Metal Products in Chicago, where she was responsible for trade show marketing, events and meetings. TSEA is moving its headquarters to Chicago later this fall.
