Good News: Less Luggage Was Lost in 2016

According to the Baggage Report 2017 from SITA, which provides airline telecommunications services, the mishandled-baggage rate reached a record low in 2016, at 5.3 bags lost per 1,000 handled, down from 6.5 bags lost per 1,000 in 2015. To bring that number down further, the International Air Transport Association has passed Resolution 753 on bag tracking, to take effect in June 2018. IATA member airlines will be expected to track the surrender of the bag from the passenger to the IATA member or agent; the delivery of the bag onto the aircraft; the delivery and acquisition of the bag between members or their agents when custody changes between carriers; and the delivery of the bag back to the passenger.
